Mom’s Apple Fritters

These apple fritters are absolutely the best! Fresh, hot apple fritters were always a favorite treat when I was growing up. Today, my kids enjoy them just as much as my brothers and I did all those years ago. This is the recipe my mom made; what can I say? There’s nothing to improve on — here apple fritters were the best.

Mom's Apple Fritters
These wonderful Apple Fritters are as good as country cooking can get. There's nothing quite as satisfying as a scrumptious fritter oozing with warm apples and a sugary glaze. These are a perfect treat in the fall when apples are abundant.

Mom's Apple Fritters
Instructions
  1. Combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder, in a large bowl; whisk until thoroughly combined.
  2. In a small bowl, add the milk and egg, whisk together until combined; add this mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix just until everything is incorporated.
  3. Combine the cinnamon and sugar. Sprinkle over the diced apple and toss until the apples are even coated. Add to the batter and gently stir in. Be careful to not move the apples around too much.
Heat oil to 370° F.
  1. Very carefully drop heaping spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, (be sure to get some apples in each scoop); fry until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes, flipping to make sure the fritters cook evenly. Work in batches until all of the dough has been fried.
  2. When the fritters are done cooking, remove from the oil and place on a cooling rack (lay paper towels under the rack to catch any drips).
  3. If you're going to roll the fritters in a cinnamon/sugar mixture, combine 1/4 cup sugar with 1-1/2 tsp cinnamon in a small bowl. When the fritters are just cool enough to handle, roll them in the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  4. If you want a glaze on your fritters, combine confectioners' sugar, milk, and vanilla extract; stir until smooth. If the glaze is too thick, add a few more drops of milk until you get the desired consistency. When the fritters are still warm, but not too hot, dip in the vanilla glaze. Place back on the rack to finish cooling and to allow the glaze to set.
Recipe Notes

If you prefer, fritters can also be sprinkled with a little confectioners' sugar when they are almost completely cooled.

Would it be possible to make these gluten free, either gluten free flour or almond flour?

    • Hi June,
I think substituting GF flour should work just fine. I use Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free flour a lot and it can be substituted at a 1:1 ratio.

I don’t know if it matters but is there a special type apple you recommend?

    • Joanne, that’s a great question. I find the best apples to use are granny smiths, because they stand up to the cooking without getting too soft. A firm tart red apple would also be nice.

  • Hello, Debbie. These apple fritters look amazing! 😋 As much as I love fried food, I wonder if you have an air fryer version. How long should these fritters cook in an air fryer and do you (or anyone else) have any tips? Thank you!

    • Hi Laura, I haven’t tried these in an air fryer, but it sounds like an interesting idea. I think you’d want to set the temp on the air fryer a little lower if you try it. Please let me know how it goes!

I was hoping to print out your apple fritter recipe but it doesn’t come up. The picture comes up but not the recipe.

    • Hi Kimberly, I’m so sorry you had trouble printing the recipe. Everything is fixed now and you shouldn’t have any more problems 🙂
