Christmas Sugar Cookies
These sugar cookies really are the very best. The dough is just perfect for rolling, so you can easily cut a variety of fun shapes. Once your cookies bake, the sky’s the limit when it comes to decorating. I use this recipe as my go-to Christmas cookie because it always turns out great and they always get rave reviews.
These rolled sugar cookies are the classic cookie just made for decorating. We use these for our Christmas cookies, but you could certainly use cookie cutters and decorations to fit any holiday or theme. These cookies go in a hurry, so be sure to make a lot!

- 1-1/2 cups butter, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 5 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt

Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until it is smooth. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined. Cover; chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
- Preheat oven to 400° F. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface; it should be between 1/4" and 1/2" thick. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Gently transfer the cut cookies to an ungreased cookie sheet, spacing them 1 inch apart.
- Bake 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from oven and transfer cookies to a cooling rack. Cool completely.
Recipe Notes
Sprinkle cookies with decorating sugar or sprinkles before baking.
If you prefer, you can decorate cookies after baking. Make your favorite icing and get creative with your cookie decorating skills.
