Give Your Baked Goods the Perfect Look!
Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, Christmas, the Fourth of July or some other special occasion, coloring your own sugar will give you the perfect decorating sugar to match the holiday. Of course, you can customize your sugar to coordinate with the decorations for just about any party. There are definitely some colored sugar options in the store, but these are often expensive. Additionally, you’re going to be limited when it comes to color choices. Whether you’re making cupcakes, cookies, candy, or other treats, making your own colored sugar at home is a breeze and it only costs pennies! Colored sugar or sanding sugar is a great way to add a special touch to your baked goods.
How to Color Decorating Sugar at Home
Take a look at the picture at the top of this post. For each shade of color I used 1/4 cup of white sugar and added the corresponding number of liquid red food coloring drops. Use a blender to get the best consistency. I tried the food processor, but it’s not a great choice unless you want powdered sugar. Keep the blender on low and pulse in the color. I experimented with paste and gel colors, but they didn’t seem to blend in as well as the liquid drops.
If you’re looking for liquid food coloring dye, you might be surprised to find that they aren’t as readily available as they once were. I tried Target, Winn Dixie, and Publix with no luck. Here’s a convenient link where you can purchase the food coloring online if you can’t find it locally: McCormick Food and Egg Coloring Dye
Of course, you can get creative and dye your own sugar for any occasion. Try neon colors for bright fun birthday treats and pastel colors for Easter or a baby shower. Dye sugar to match the colors of your favorite sports team, party theme, or simply to add color and variety to your baked goods.
