I grew up in the Midwest, so a wonderful apple crisp was a part of life during cool fall days. Every family has their own little twist on this classic dessert, but the recipes that consistently came out on top were the ones that had been handed down from generation to generation.
This old fashioned apple crisp recipe is a perfect blend of sweet and tart, and it always reminds me of those fun days my brothers and I would spend at grandma’s house.
Servings: 12
Ingredients
- 10 cups apples, Peeled, cored, and sliced. (I like to use Rome, Granny Smith, or a combination of sweet/tart apples.)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 Tbsp flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup water
Crumble Topping
- 1-1/2 cups quick cooking oats
- 1-1/2 cups flour
- 1-1/3 cups packed brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 3/4 cup butter, softened
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350° F.
- Combine the sugar, 1 Tbsp flour, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp nutmeg in a large bowl. Gently toss in apple slices to coat.
- Pour 1/2 cup of water into a 9" x 13" baking pan. Add coated apples directly on top of the water.
Crumble Topping
- In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients for the crumble topping, except the butter. Once the ingredients are thoroughly combined, cut in butter until the mixture is crumbly.
- Using your fingers, sprinkle topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake at 350° F for approximately 45 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
